I doubt most people know the proper way to vent batteries. In our power substations there are huge battery rooms that require high end venting. Explosion proof fans are used, but more important is how the intake and exhaust ports are placed in case of a fan failure. Even in my boat I have upper air intake and exhaust vents on board. Hydrogen rises so it will accumulate in the lid if it doesn't vent up. Plus there needs to be an air intake to push out the hydrogen out. I doubt SMB does this. But it really depends on how much is produced. That hinges on several factors such as battery type, sizes, # of batteries and more. There is a link in the electrical FAQ's that covers most of what you're asking. Might be overkill for a small battery bank.
