The OP said the cable was too short to connect to a remote switch, but you could butt splice a short additional piece of cable to the original, then make another short jumper from the battery switch to the battery terminal. I did something similar when I relocated the mess of cables (6 of them were on the battery terminal) to a remote buss bar. Don't forget that simply disconnecting the ground cable may still leave the second battery for a diesel or possibly the house battery connected, meaning the cable will be hot even when not connected to the under hood battery.

Amazon has 12v amp meters that use a CT (current transformer) rather than a shunt. Just slip it over the cable, plug it in and your done. The issue I ran into though is that the supplied cable from the shunt to the meter is really short, something like two or three feet and is molded with really fine wire making it difficult to splice in a longer piece.
