Battery Switch

We were traveling down the interstate with the AC running off the batteries when the battery switch flipped off. As far as I can tell this is just a switch to totally turn off 12 volt power to the van. The house batteries were fully charged when we left the house and this was only an hour down the road. I dn't understand why this happened. Ideas?

Re: Batter Switch

If it's the same switch SMB Fresno installed for me, it's rated to 200 amps and will trip since it's actually a breaker. Can't imagine how you pulled a load that high though.

Re: Battery Switch

Could a wire somewhere have rubbed through the insulation and short to the body/frame on a specific bump or road vibration? That could trip a 200A breaker in a hurry, and still work normally until you hit the right bump on the road.

Re: Battery Switch

I talked to Paul at SMB Austin. I wasn't aware that the switch was also a breaker, makes some sense now. Guess I missed that at the orientation. Two things that factored into it tripping:

1. It was 107 Degrees in Dallas/Ft Worth. Got to love the weather here.
2. The switch is low to the floor and kind of in a corner and can probably stand a lot more ventilation.

Also, the fridge was running. Anyhow with all the factors considered the switch may have overheated contributing to it's tripping.

I'm taking the van to Austin on the 17th for some fixes/adjustments and we will address the issue.

Re: Battery Switch

Many times breakers will trip for reasons that might be never known. A trip and reset will often result in correct operation after that. But it also might indicate a problem that could lead to real trouble. Just don't chase a ghost. Good luck with your trouble shooting.

Re: Battery Switch

I'm at SMB Austin today getting a number of things done. One thing we will do is vent like mad around the area of the DC switch. Actually they're adding a bunch of vents to that whole gaucho seat area. Hopefully that will prevent any future problems.
