C B Antennas

scatter, What cb radio did you decide on that fits the top space? I found the SBM supplied one was a cheapo, so decided to wait and do it myself.

when I bought my SMB (used) it had a Cobra CB/Weather radio and a antenna that is attached to the glass. Testing on the LA Freeways with the truckers I guesstimate about a 3-5 mile range. Guess it would be good if I was traveling with someone, don't really use it much tho, mostly for the weather and buoy reports.

I use a Cobra 75 WX ST which is the little unit with the radio in the handset/microphone. The only thing that has to be remote mounted is a little Connector Box and it'll fit most anywhere. Have had good luck with it and love the way it will fit most anywhere.
I don't use the thing very often as the only antenna I have is a mag mount which I stick on the roof. Keep knocking that sucker off. That's one reason I started this thread. Trying to find a decent antenna. Was hoping someone had tried something that is a little more unobtrusive. I know, I know, the longer it is and the higher it's mounted the better, but I'm willing to give up some range for something that won't get in the way.
Still looking for ideas people....

CB antennas

I will look for a source, I have not seen one in years, but the old cop cars always had a tall fender or bumper mounted whip antenna, spring at the bottom, which could be bent over and attached at the top, for "high speed" cruising. This would solve your knocking it off problem and still give good signal gain, when you needed it.
ala Broderick Crawford and "Highway Patrol" or Andy's Mayberry cruiser.

Patrick - Radio Shack has most of the stuff you need for that whip antenna. They have a 102" stainless whip (item 21-903); the base spring (21-1118) and a ball mount (21-1115). I don't see the old bumper mount like you're describing.

I have this. I can take photos but it was installed by the PO.

Mine came with a K40 antenna. Considered a top performer. Different mounts available. PO wanted it mounted through the roof, so that's what SMB did. I'd recommend a different mount. Drilling a roof is not cool.
