Re: Cool Water

I've not used that one, but I can recommend this one:

Combine it with a SteriPen and you're good to go anywhere.

Of course you can always use a tampon in a pinch.

Re: Cool Water

I've never used one of the straw types. This in the filter I travel with.

The thing I like about it is it screws onto a water bottle and you just sit by the side of a river and pump till your water bottle is full. None of the small ones process a lot of water fast.

Most river outfitters run with a large commercial setup that process a lot of water pretty fast.

Not to go off topic or anything but even this $1500 Katadyn filter has a hard time with Narwhal virus. http://shop.katadyn.com/product/8016389 ... guage_id=1

And I've puked my brains out to prove it on the Colorado. There's no substitute for purification tablets or good ole bleach for those in a tricky place with questionable water.

Cool Water

Having a good naturopathic doctor to visit when you get home is also handy.

Re: Cool Water

I don't think any portable water filter will remove viruses. They are too small. The purpose of the Steripen is to disrupt the DNA of the virus to prevent it from reproducing. The virus isn't actually removed. Works best if the water is clear so should be filtered first. Municipal water systems do the same thing. Or so I've read.

Re: Cool Water

You literally feel like you are going to suck your brains back down the tube. The straw types provide far too much resistance to be any good, (i.e. easy).

On the other hand if they didn't - probably wouldn't trust 'em...
