Ford regulator info?

Hello!

Does anyone have specs for the standard Ford voltage regulator (for the 5.4 V8)? I interested in the voltage levels it puts out, current curve, etc. Planning my charging system now and this would be useful information!

Does anyone run their regulator output through another charge controller? Or any other interesting setups? I remember reading about someone here running their alternator output through an inverter, and the 120V from there through a smart charger.

Cheers!
Mike.

Re: Ford regulator info?

This was shown to me but I don't know if it will work with our vans.

I never followed up on it. After installing a 200A alternator I was worried about over charging.

Re: Ford regulator info?

I had the same question and came across this thread.

How does an alternator keep from overcharging a starter (or house) battery? The voltage regulator is a constant output, right?

Re: Ford regulator info?

If the batteries are fully charged, I see only an amp or so being pushed into the house system.
If the house batteries have been brought down to 12V or lower, when I start the vehicle the batteries can pull as much as 30+ amps which tappers off in time.
The alternator is regulating the charge. I'm not sure about this but was told by a Xantrex Tech that a battery will take only what it needs provided it's a regulated charge.
But what if something fails?
I had a starting battery go bad. The charger pumped all it could into every battery. Both starting battery boxes got very hot. One tested bad and the other was OK even though it was quite warm. No damage was done to the house system but as high priced as these batteries are I started looking for some way to protect them.
If you find something post back on what you find.
