How is this even possible?

2008 E350 with electric tow mirrors. I've had it 3-4 years and the mirrors always worked just fine and the drivers side still works just fine but all the sudden the passenger side will work it just goes in the wrong directions.

If I move the joystick UP the mirror goes Left, move the joystick DOWN and the mirror goes Right

If I move the joystick Left the mirror goes UP, move it right and the mirror goes down.

If im thinking correctly even if you could mount the joystick wrong (which you can not) and rotate it then it still would not be moving the mirror correctly.

HELP

Edit: I did have the door panel off several months ago to put in new speakers and insulate the doors. Maybe i have not even tried to adjust mirrors since then?? Anyway i just pulled the panel off and mirror control just to look at things. There is nothing to see. You can't install it wrong, it's the OEM connector, it only snaps in one way

I hate Electrical issues! They are time consuming & aggravating.
Here is a link to a thread which originated on another Forum which seems very similar:

I'd spray some electronics/contact cleaner into both sides of the connector and see if that helps any. If not, replace the switch (they are pretty cheap) and see if that does it.

Interesting thread. Guess I'll try taking the switch apart, didn't look like it came apart but plenty in the tread seemed to have done it. Thanks

Maybe I'll try that first before taking it apart. Thanks

Well the connector was clean and no visible issues so I took the switch apart and again clean as a whistle. Went and bought a replacement switch and no such luck. Everything is exactly the same. The mirror moves in every direction just not in the direction you move the joystick...and only on the passenger side, works perfectly on the drivers side. Got to be something mechanical in the mirror....humm last time i went into a mirror on my FJ Cruiser I broke the glass damit.

This may be a dumb idea, but why not just move the wires around so it works right? I think the worst case would be that it fixes itself and you have to move the wires back.

This may be more complicated than I think but it's an idea.

Steve,

As you already know, the thread from TwoXentrix that you mentioned does include a post from someone who experienced similar problems that were reportedly traced to a bad joystick assembly, but I'm having trouble totally grokking that explanation. But anything that has happened once - can happen again.

Have you tried pulling up or pushing down on the joystick while moving it fore/aft or left/right? If this changes the behavior of your passenger mirror, that would generally point to a bad joystick assembly as the culprit.

Since the Left-(none)-Right switch near the joystick merely routes where the joystick's outputs go, it seems like your problem could lie in the wiring between the joystick assembly and the passenger mirror. That is, it almost appears that the two pairs of wires that run to the up/down and left/right gear-motors in your passenger mirror have been swapped.

Would it be worth a second look at the passenger mirror wiring connectors at both ends, i.e. at the joystick assembly in the driver's door, AND at the mirror wiring connector inside of the passenger door (right behind the speaker)?

I know that the connectors are polarized, but stranger things have happened . . .

I replaced the entire switch assembly and no change, everything still acting exactly the same...wonky.
It's got to be on the mirror end, I guess. I'll check there next but haven't mustarded the energy to attack it this weekend yet.

I may resort to that if i can't figure out what has changed.
