There are quite a few people who have gone the route of cheap android phones for nav. The quality of the maps is so much better than Garmin. I am using a low level Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 tablet and android phone for nav.

Same could be done with Gaia or another app and an iPhone as some on this forum do.

Linking with a HU would provide an excellent option.

Crutchfield would be my go to recommendation as well. They will provide any necessary wiring harness and install instructions with purchase and they have excellent live customer support if needed along the way.
I’d also highly consider upgrading your speakers while you’re at it, even though you don’t consider yourself an audiophile, the stock speakers are crap and most likely have rotted out. You really don’t have to spend a ton on decent direct replacements that will not sound like garbage when you do want to listen to music, podcast, or take a phone call.
I’d also recommend Kenwood, Alpine or Pioneer, although it looks like a good number of units are out of stock at the moment.
Along with CarPlay, BT, camera inputs, another consideration is picking a unit that has a physical volume knob vs. having 2 tiny little +/- buttons, much easier to adjust while driving, although they’re getting harder to find.
You’ll want to consider getting a unit with built in nav, it does add to the cost, but nice to have for sure when you’re out in the middle of nowhere with no service, I mostly use downloaded maps through Gaia for that, but there are times I’ve relied on or referenced my built in nav.
There’s some value priced units like the Boss units that might give you what you need, I just don’t know the quality, I might end up trying one out as a budget option in my project van.
Edit: I will take a look and see if I can find a unit through Crutchfield I can link for you.

Gents

a BIG thank you for your input

My solution was EZ

Call Crutchfield customer support

they have a handy log in feature and the guy walked me thru exactly what i needed

Note:
for $25 they supply a custom harness for the rig
also
they only use ONE brand wirless BU cam
pricey, but it is the only one they stand behind

Stick with a unit that uses Garmin Navigation. Personally i want the maps built in to the unit so even if i lose cell signal i still have navigation.

GPS is not dependent in internet or cell service.

I might be late but we put in a Sony XAV-AX1000 in our van.

Pros:
Affordable
Simple
Physical volume knob (easier to use while driving)
Android Auto and Apply Carplay compatible
Backup camera compatible

Looks like it's been discontinued but the 3200 is a close replacement.

It relies on your phone for navigation which I much prefer. Garmin maps can be out of date within a few years and your cellphone will still load your location without service assuming you've preloaded your route/map.

Personally I only use google maps on major roads anyway. If you're in the boonies chances are you're using a backroads map or GAIA etc. already. In these cases your built in stereo nav system is a moot point.

Actually I just checked and GAIA interfaces with android auto now. I've never tried it but that's cool! Topo maps on your stereo nav? Yes please!

I also have installed the
XAV-AX1000 + back up camera
Does what I need it do.
No issues
I did replace door speakers with some Infiniti units which
Resulted in a huge improvement.
Also installed a garmin front camera.
