Kenwood DNX512EX - Garmin GPS Update

Ok, so I was tired of my GPS not knowing where the nearest food and gas outlets were, so I popped for the map update. About $80 including the shipping costs. I guess since it's a DVD with a couple GB of data they don't want you to download it. It has some theft protection schemes also to keep you from just making a copy and giving it to your friends. First, you have to update the operating software on the unit. You can download that from Kenwood/Garmin. Mine needed version 2.7. You then extract the file and burn a CD so you can install it in the vehicle. Don't turn the vehicle off while updating the OS.

After the OS is updated, you then need to update the maps. Loading this disc is going to take an hour or two, so make sure the ignition is in accessory (or the radio switch is on) mode so you don't have to run the engine for two hours. Kenwood had pretty good instructions on their website. Couldn't see much in the way of graphics changes, but it can now find a couple of restaurants near home that it couldn't find before. We are getting ready for another trip to AZ and parts west, so we'll see how it does. Overall, it went pretty smooth. Just make sure the unit is in Navigation mode with you insert the various disks.

It's amazing how much it costs to upgrade any of the Garmin's. That's what I was told it would cost to upgrade the Nuvi I have.

Re: Kenwood DNX512EX - Garmin GPS Update

I just upgraded my 660 Nuvi with North America 2010 maps. I bought the lifetime update for $119. I paid $60 for the yearly one in 2008. It took 3 hr to down load to the computer, i or 2 hr to down load to the Nuvi, and 45 min on hold to get through to a Mac tec. as I had to have help.
BUT I LOVE MY NUVI
