When packing to “camp in place” I noticed that the positive (red) wire terminal on the controller that is attached to the 100PV panel on top of my penthouse roof. The terminal had some melted plastic covering part of it. There was also a large green sponge that had what looked like a burn mark from the regulator terminal.
Downstream from the controller everything looked good. No clue what was going on so I disconnect both wires from the regulator. Both screws that held the wire terminals in place were tight. The battery it was connected to was not being charged.
The first thing I want to do is replace the controller but, since we are camping on BLM land in the desert, I have no idea who would mail a controller to a Post Office General Delivery.
Any idea what would cause the positive terminal to heat up enough to melt the plastic around it?
Do you mean 100 watt panel? Generally this would mean that , loose connection , bad terminal crimp, and possibly undersized wires. What controller is it?
