New charger/converter install

When I left of my cooler to fridge thread, http://sportsmobileforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=9398 I was unable to run the new fridge because the old charger/converter put out 17+ volts which was to much for the fridge. I looked around on the web and found a new charger/converter manufactured by WFCO for $129.50 + shipping. It arrived on Friday and the install was finished today.

I went with a C/C instead of a charger/inverter because I do not run any 120v appliances in the van when on house power. That means no microwave, coffee maker, toaster, etc.

Here is the old charger/converter that was located under the dinette.

I removed the access door to the old C/C as that was the location for the new C/C. It was almost the correct size. Just had to make the corners square and cut 3/4" off the top. Cutting 23 year old particle board proved to be easy.

Once I had the hole the right height I test fitted the new C/C in the space. There was a gap on the left hand side that had to be filled.

Then cut down a piece of fir that I had laying around to fill in the gap. Once that was done it was time for the wiring. The C/C has six 12 volt circuits with one being used for the battery. It also has space for a 30 amp 120v main breaker and two 15 amp 120v breakers. It is all in a nice neat package. Connected up the batter and checked out the 12v side and then plugged it in to house power. All seems to be working well with a 13.6v charge on the batter. The fridge is now operating correctly and has cooled down to about 38 degrees. Stocked it with some beverages so that it has something to cool.

Here is the unit with the cover open and another photo with the cover closed.

The nicest thing, other than it working correctly, I like about the new C/C is the amount of storage space I gained under the dinette. You can see the outline of the old C/C in the carpet in this photo.

In this one you can see how deep the new one is. The added storage will be nice. Am already thinking of what can go in there.

Re: New charger/converter install

That is surly a whole lot smaller.
What are you goung to use the new 12 volt fuses for?
Were your old ac/110 circuit breakers in that location (or near the location of your new charger) or did you move them there?

Glad your fridge is working and you are no longer over charging your batteries.

For the 12v circuits I used 15a for the heater refrigerator and the 12v receptacle in the wall. The lighting circuit got a 10a. There are two spare circuit that can be used for up to a 30 a fuse and the other a 15a.

There was only one 120v breaker on the old system that was part of a receptacle. This is not an ideal solution and a little creapy. Will rewire the 120v side this fall or winter.
