I use my inreach when we travel often. I do the overland thing and keep a constant update when the pack is traveling so others who were delayed can meet up and even get messages in and out to plan gathering points.
Also knowing if the kids or the wife have an emergency they can always reach me. And see where I am.
I usually teather it to my iPad and keep the map up with the route uploaded to it. Nice big screen keeps from getting turned around. And using the keyboard on either my phone or the tablet makes messages a snap!!
The ability to map and upload routes along with tethering to devices made it a no brainer vs the spot..a spot x and a GPS receiver for my iPad was $50 less than an inreach...my inreach will teather to my phone and has a more reliable GPS receiver..win win all the way around.
I also keep my inreach in my work bag as an emergency backup. You never know when you gotta bug out.
