Can you trace the trail you're on so you can go back and follow it at a later date? My PC has standard USGS topo maps and I can trace the trail in whatever color and style line I wish.
Good question. I've never tried it. Will have to go play with my GPS for awhile to see its capabilities.

Re: Off-road ish car GPS

For the laptop, netbook, carputer user DeLORME Topo 9 is a very good multi-use GPS program. I use it as one of the GPS unit in the carputer. It goes along well with their hand held units also, I have a PN-40. One of the nice features is that for around $30.00 a year you can get access to map library and download all of the USGS quads and arid color imagery. These can be overlay-ed on their existing map. The display can be in 2D or 3D mode. I would say it is great for planing and syncing with hand held, although it has travel mode, as far as touch screen actions you are limited. This is a snap shot on my carputer with aerial image overlay. This was of Topo 8 I have upgraded to Topo 9.

Re: Off-road ish car GPS

Forget carputers.....!

Anyway, here is an off road GPS I just found, AvMap:
http://www.avmap.us/products/terr/geosa ... troduction

You can import maps from a variety of sources and convert them, click through all the tabs and you will see.

Click on the "4x4" functions on the picture of the menu, it shows a video of what it can do.
Or view video here: https://www.facebook.com/video/video.ph ... 5968359069

I haven't bought one, just came across it. These also work with APRS if you are a ham, which is why I was checking them out.

Here is a picture from their Europe product, I assume it looks pretty similar when you upload your own topo map:
