Please help me identify part

Apologies in advance if this posting is on the wrong forum, but I think this is where it belongs. Don't hesitate to direct me to the proper forum, if not.

New (to us) owner of 2003 Ford E350 Sportsmobile. Installing a new stereo and was going to route some wires via the access panel on top of the dash.

Popped it open and found a bit of a mess. Looks like maybe a rodent at some point. Wires to this metal component are completely frayed, so inoperable.

I don't know what it is though.

Appreciate any direction to a resource on econoline wiring or build that may help me identify this and other parts in the future.

That's a vacuum thingy for making your AC vents (blend door) work properly. Others here will know all the specifics. I know JWA has posted a lot about fixing it, since it gives some people trouble.

Is your heat/AC and vent system working properly? I kind of doubt it.

Thank you. Heat works but haven't tried A/C. Will give it a go.

Those aren't wires......they are vacuum hoses.....

You can get vacuum hose at your local auto parts store.

As 86 Scotty mentioned..the metal can has a rubber diaphragm inside..hook up a vacuum hose to it and the suck on the hose.....you should see the actuator move the blend door for the heat/AC.

Buy a few feet of new vacuum line and connect it up..and see what works.

Thanks, JWA. So very helpful!
I'm planning to work on it this weekend, so great timing. I just need to find a few more key components, and perhaps be a bit creative on parts I can't find.

Most anything you'd need--that I can think of anyway---should be readily available. Again if needed just PM me and I can most likely help.
