Re: Portable solar

50W never seems like enough to bother with.

Re: Portable solar

Nice and compact, much cheaper than than the portable 50w system that GoWesty sells for $600. All depends on what your needs are.

Re: Portable solar

50 watts is the minimum I would ever go for something to maintain a battery system. As far as use in the field, it would take a long time to recharge a large battery or a bank of batteries from a deep discharge, but would be great for smaller items like phones and maybe an I-pod.

I think they are selling for about 300 till the end of the month if you tell em you saw the ad in FMC.

Re: Portable solar

I went and looked at their fleabay store: A 100w panel, charge controller and basic wiring for $180, you need to add another $20 or so for mounts, extra wire etc. but not too bad a price.

Re: Portable solar

Finally broke down and bought a 100w panel, solar controller, roof-mount brackets and the necessary wire to set up a recharging system for the van. Got it from Renergy on fleabay for just under $200 inc. shipping. The controller is pretty simple looking but does work so far. The panel is monocrystalline, frame is robust, has a good guarantee. Did not have time to wire it up permanently but set it up for external use with a couple of legs.

Ah yes, secret spot #17. It's south of Socorro and west of the interstate, best in the spring and fall. A small group of us have been developing it as a little climbing area over the last several years. But it's also just a beautiful spot for exploring for a couple of days. One of the many treasures that you can happen upon out in the desert that look like nothing from a distance.

Hmmmm....may have to ask my brother if he knows that area. He and his wife live in Socorro.

Probably don't know it but I have enjoyed a few nooks and crannies in that direction. Nothing like adding a little water to a desert wash or canyon.
