Powerpole crimper

Have been thinking about getting a crimper so I can start making my own cables with Anderson powerpole connectors on them. Does anyone have any experience with either of these crimpers?

I bought one from Powerwerx, I think it was that one. Works fine.

I have the Tri crimp tool. Have been very happy with it.

The Andy's crimper may be good too but I have never had a good experience dealing with High Sierra so I would not be inclined to go back.

For instance, the say that they manufacture the tool in their ad but then state
The Andy Crimp Pro will have red/black, orange or blue handles. The color does not matter.

Well if THEY manufacturer it I would think they would have better QC to get matching or uniform colors. I think THEY probably manufacturer it in China. It's just little stuff like this that puts me off from High Sierra. Too bad because they are a local California firm. I do have one of their $500 screwdriver antennas that they stopped making shortly after I bought it. That kind of pissed me off as well.

Besides, 15and 30 amp is as high as I will ever go.

Crimping is the way to go though. I soldered them for a long time before shelling out the bucks for the tool. Crimping is much easier and gives you a better finished product.

Charlie, I have ordered from High Sierra once before, but that was just for some ground cable and some silicone self-fusing tape. No issues.

Thanks Mike. I will eventually need a couple of 50A connectors, but not at the current time.

I won't be dealing with 50A by any means, but the solar panel I'm looking at comes with the grey 50A connectors, so I either need to conform to that, or change them out to one of the smaller Anderson powerpoles. Once I get a crimper, that would be easy too.

Gave this more thought, and convinced myself to buy the TRIcrimp and convert the whole solar panel setup to the 30A powerpole connector, and then I realized that if I cut off the 50A powerpole connector from the solar panel, I'd be setting myself up to give the solar panel seller an easy out if I ever had any warranty issues.

Was still leaning towads the TRIcrimp, but it doesn't look like anyone sells the die for the SB50 powerpole connector separately, you have to but a set of six dies ($55 for the set), one of which accomodates the SB50 connector.

Guess I'll be going with the Andy Pro Crimp instead.

I am just curious why not just solder the pole onto the cable, then crimp it in a vice and then clip it into the cap? That is what I have always done and I have not seen a loss in amp or gain on the line. Is it just so you can crimp on the go, or crimp in location without needing a vice? Does the vice not do the job right?

I am not saying I have a lot of Vices but of the ones I have, I tend to turn to them quite frequently...

Not only do I not have a vise, I don't even have a workbench. For me a crimper is easier, quicker, and gives more consistant results.

I was just not sure if there was a downside to all my vices. My wife didn't mind my first one, but over the years she has started to grow weary of finding out I have a growing number of them.
