Question about backup lights in Aluminess bumper

Guys: Thanks for all of your help in the past. I have two backup lights that are in the aluminess rear bumper. They have never worked. I also have one under the van, facing forward, near the exhaust.

I am not electrically inclined to say the least so I am just hoping for a place to start. Is there supposed to be a switch to throw these on or should they turn on whenever vehicle in Reverse?

I have tried everything I could think of, including testing wiring w/ a voltmeter. Nothing. I have replacement lights that I procured from Harbor freight but want to ask before I begin.

I believe this bumper and other accessories like additional Hella lights were added after the initial build, by either SMB Fresno, or Aluminess.

Thanks,

Re: Question about backup lights in Aluminess bumper

If installed by SMBW they should come on automatically when you put it in reverse and manually if you flip a switch. My switch ('08 e350) was mounted above the drivers sun visor.

I take it your volt meter test ruled out burned out bulbs?

Could be a bad relay. I'm not sure where they install it. You might post up your make, model and year so others can chime in.

Ford E350, 6.0, Quigley conversion. It does have two switches above the driver but they are spoken for by the Hella lights. Where would I find the relay?

Thanks!

Try pulling the two tail lights and looking in the cavity. It's just a guess, but that is probably the easiest location to pick up the reverse lighting circuit.

On mine, there were a couple of relays beneath the drivers side foot-well. (The plastic foot-well pops right out)

Re: Question about backup lights in Aluminess bumper

My van had bad grounds on the SMB reversing lights. I fixed them when I installed new lights and bumper.

Well. it's 2020 and I have a question regarding the switch that operates the rear aluminess bumper lights. Lights come in in when in reverse but now the switch does not activate the lights any longer when in park. Any ideas?
