I just bought a Mr. Heater a couple of days ago, and when I got home, there in the mailbox was a Sporty's Pilot Shop Catalog. In it was a heater LIKE Mr. Heater, but in my opinion, nicer.
www.sportys.com item # 10796T Portable Propane Heater $129.95

I know you said that the diesel furnace might be off the possibilities list, but we became believers in the diesel furnace last weekend.
At 10k ft when the temp dropped to 31 overnight and the van interior temp got down to 51, the diesel furnace quickly solved our chilliness issue.
The fact that you have a diesel van gives you this option..... no extra fuel system to add..... no electrical changes to make.... no new loose gadgets to store somewhere...

You can buy a hell of a lot of blankets for $2900 . Just sayin'. And we have a heater in our rig, the propane version. Works great.

You can stay warm at night with a good down comforter. We've done this many nights, down to 18 in the camper.
The problem is your water system if frozen solid. It takes several hours of warmth to get water flowing. I suppose you could fill the kettle with water the night before, but if the daytime temps stay in the 30's and 40's you will still have frozen pipes and pump.

I've had frozen pipes with the heat on too, it's not necessarily a cure-all for that problem!

I know you said that you do not care for catalytic heaters, however for some interim use I can vouch for the little Coleman Cat heater. We used to use it in my wife's Astro Van when we were camping in it. It worked well and we just cracked a window. oclv

Thanks Adventureduo. I think that would require a propane system, however!
I appreciate everyone's input. Seems like there are a number of options to consider, though no single one is jumping out as the obvious best.
One example of the need will be when I park and sleep at the base of Mammoth Mountain in the Sierras to ski: gets below zero. Another is camping with our two-year-old twins, who so far won't use blankets at night.

I was going to suggest a Wave 3 or Wave 6 Cat heater, but if you don't have a propane system, that could be a problem.
Anyone know if the Wave heaters are adaptable to use those smaller 5- or 1-pound canisters?

Hi Jim,
Here is a link for Blue Heat.
http://www.webastoshowroom.com/BlueHeat ... at_faq.htm
This is a heating system that runs on gas.
If you search on their site, you may find that it will also run on diesel.
Peace,
Zugg
