Re: Radio not working (and, OMG, not the SMB switch?)

Yep. Activating that switch lets you turn on the radio without the key in the ignition. With the switch off, the radio works like other vehicles (Radio gets power in Acc or On key positions).

The other answers are correct but didn't completely answer your question. If the radio switch in the rear is ON, then the radio will play and be powered by the house battery. If OFF, the radio will only work if the key is in the ignition and turned to ACC or the engine is running.

One problem with the radio switch is that if you are listening to the radio while parked and then leave it on and drive away, the radio will continue to take power from the house battery, even if the engine is running. However, in that situation, the engine alternator would still be charging the house battery. Or if you have the radio switch on but the radio volume down very low, you will be discharging the house battery and not realize it.

Re: Radio not working (and, OMG, not the SMB switch?)

thanks all. my new question has to do with 'modern stereos', like one that takes a backup camera. It seems that when all power to the unit is cutoff and then turned on, it goes back to the original set-up screen and probably loses all presets----just like if i disconnected the battery. So, if i have a switch that chooses from house battery or van battery, in the 'off position' it would have no 'constant voltage' from either battery and therefore would act as if the radio/stereo had been completely removed. Or is there some kind of relay inherent in the 'radio switch'? thanks again....joe

Re: Radio not working (and, OMG, not the SMB switch?)

Your modern stereo should have one voltage input that is connected to a always hot input and not switched. If you believe that you have hooked it up correctly, check fuse f2.22

Re: Radio not working (and, OMG, not the SMB switch?)

thanks....it does have that 'always hot' line. I think i'll just check the current draw on both the switched and the 'always hot' because maybe the only thing i really need is a 3-way rocker selection switch that would take the 'switched power' from either the van fusebox OR the house fuse panel.

Re: Radio not working (and, OMG, not the SMB switch?)

Sure, a three way switch (SPDT) would work, but you will not be able to have a indicator LED with just using it. ( using a DPDT switch you could add a LED). Are you sure that your always hot line is going to the now switched power source. You should not need any battery switch to get the radio to work correctly.
