thx
Lobo here are a couple if images - The Pioneer Z1 slides right into the existing location -- It does have about a 1/8" gap on both side but is hardly noticable

I'm getting the Kenwood equivalent of the Pioneer. (I forget the actual model #) , but it fills up the space and has GPS, I-pod, XM, and back up camera. It's the one Rob (who does installations for SMB) recommended.

Lobo-
The unit appears to be (from the contract I got from the stereo place that installs them for SMB) a Kenwood 710 ex AM/FM. It has a 7 inch touch screen, Bluetooth I-pod, GPS Nav., 1 CD slot (behind the screen) (The screen tilts to access it) , remote phone mic., back-up camera that works when you select reverse, (or when you flip a switch if you want to check if your trailer is still there). I'm pretty sure it also makes milkshakes and takes out the garbage too, but I'll have to check. The one I saw at SMB was in the Baja Tan van that appeared in the latest Overland Journal.

Lobo:

The Z1 is an older model. You can still find the Z2 & Z3 as well as the D. The D is cheaper. The model out this month is the F900.

The new model is the Z2 -- I believe it is exactly the same with updated maps and software. I actually purchased a new larger hard drive on Ebay with the updated maps and software that makes it a Z2. You can find factury refurbished Z1's on Ebay for half the price on new Z2

US Topos in in-dash Kenwood/Garmin

just wanted to let everyone know that it is possible to install maps, topos, POIs, etc into the Kenwood 7100 (and I'm sure the 7120 is the same) via SD Card. I used the regular Garmin Mapsource Topo discs, and have done the install on Windows as well as on Garmin's new Mac software (hooray!).

I was doing some research on adding maps of Mexico to my unit and came across a thread on an FJ Cruiser forum which explains it all. Their directions are all for Windows installs, but I can speak from experience that it works just fine on Garmin's Mac software as well.

http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/s ... x7100.html

I also had success adding the Baja maps from LBMaps.com.

The only caveat is that unless you own an additional copy of City Navigator with an additional unlock code (and have it installed on the same SD card), you need to remove the SD card in order to see your street maps again. Small price to pay...

here are some shots of the topo in action (in Silverton, CO - elevation 9,318) and the screen showing that topos are enabled.

Happy travels!
