@ctb, would you please provide a link to what you bought? Or brand name? Thanks.

1. I purchased a sole Renogy 12v 100AH Lithium Battery to replace the factory 200 AH AGMs.
2. As luck would have it, I didn’t actually have 200AH the past year as the previous owner replaced with a standard car battery and failed to mention it before I drove off. The past summer it ran down pretty quickly as you can imagine and that led us to replace with a Lithium Ion.
3. To use a lithium ion with the existing AGM set up, do I need to replace or add anything for this battery to run properly and more importantly recharge.
4. I’ve read the lithium ion discussion thread, but nothing jumped out as a must consideration or requirement. I have limited electrical knowledge, so anyone that wants to break this down to a elementary discussion- it would be appreciated. Basically, I’m looking for you need to buy this and that to make the Lithium work properly.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Charlie,
Unfortunately this is the thing you should check before jumping to Lithium. Rob said it best when he said that information really needs to come from Renogy, they will have the charging specs and discharging capabilities. Also to give you a complete answer I would need to know what your existing charging devices are? Do you have inverter? if so what size, are you a heavy user of inverter? Do you have solar, what charge controller, what is capacity of panels, etc. Do you currently have a ACR, Separator?

Also Renogy list two 100 amp lithium batteries, they have slightly different spec, so what model # did you actually purchase. I will be upfront with you in that I would not have gone with Renogy for lithium battery.

The reason I would need to know the charging devices that you currently have is to see if they are capable of coming close to the charge parameters of your new battery.

Good question. Every battery does more poorly in cold, but lithiums can be destroyed by charging when cold, as you note. The BMS prevents that. I don't camp in areas where it's sub -32 inside my van when I'm driving, which is when I'm charging them (discharge below freezing is not a problem like charging, although as with others performance degrades. Since LiFePO4s charge so much faster than my old AGMs, I can pretty much add 100Ah in a 3 hour drive to the next campsite.

When I've sat for a few days again generally if the sun can power my charger then it heats up the van above 32 inside and I can charge.

Others I know use heaters for them. Again, since they can charge up much faster the penalty of using some power to heat them is compensated for.

There's a battery type out there with silicon dioxide that supposed performs much much better in very cold temps. Called "lead crystal" in Australia. Sold in Canada too. Not sure about their power output, charging, etc though.
