If you're not averse to making a hole in your roof, that's likely the best spot -- no "shading" of the antenna from the vehicle.
Otherwise, I've seen them mounted on the front bumper and on the front fender, both next to the radio antenna and on the opposite side from the radio antenna.
If you go with any of the front end mounting options, there are plenty of ways to route the wire without having to drill a new hole.
