Satellite Internet

Anyone here using the Starband system? I'm considering it, and would like to know someone who has it. It would be nice to have internet and email anywhere, and I would not need a satellite cell phone. I don't spend much time in regular cell range.

Maybe the Badgers can give you some insight. They use a satellite system.

Myself, and a couple of friends, have been using Starband for years now. I have an antenna in Baja and another one in the States. Just haul the modem back and forth with me and have internet at both places. Haven't had any problems and we all are happy with our systems. There are other satellite systems out there, but for $50/month we are very happy.

OK, so I am intentionally reviving an old thread.... Yes there have been a couple of threads since this one that we close, but not quite the same.

I am researching satellite internet and want to know what options folks havem have tried, or have learned about....??

I am specifically not talking about cellular connection. We are looking for an internet connection that will work when we are out in the boonies where no self-respecting cell phone will go.

So what do we know??

Not here either. I looked into using the data product from the company that manufactures my tv dish (raysat) but the equipment was RIDICULOUSLY expensive for an in motion solution. Instead I just tether to my ATT phone when I have coverage, and enjoy being unavailable when I don't

I looked at the DirecTV option, but it is really a Web-TV thing and is not what I am looking for.

We are currently using an AT&T air card with a cellular antenna, and it works very well..... but we know it won't everywhere we want it to.

I've been happy with just an Iridium phone and email compression software (like UUPlus). Iridium is not fast enough to browse the web, but works well for light email. For me, most of my daily email can be sent and received in under a minute, for about $1.40 of usage on a prepaid phone card. This is receiving ten or fifteen emails and sending two or three. Large attachments can be expensive, a one megabyte Word file can take ten minutes to retrieve, so I configure the compression software to leave them on the server and I only fetch them if it is really necessary.

Also, Iridium has free SMS's if you buy your SIM card from the right folks.

This system, though limited, is very easy and not as fiddly as other systems I have used. There's not much setup, just plug the phone into a laptop and run the email compression software.
