stereo/dvd/gps ideas

I'm thinking of replacing the Ford (double-din size) cd player in my van, 02 E350. I'm wondering what some folks have had good luck with. I use an iphone and ipad for GPS and am mostly looking to just upgrade my stereo and have a backup monitor, which most of the big touchscreen DVD or GPS units have. Can anyone give me a model or two to look at that they've had great luck with?
I thought choosing would be easy but it looks like there are about a million different ones out there, tough to narrow it down.

The stock stereo is not quite double din size, you'll have to do some work to fit one in. Here is a previous thread on topic.

Re: stereo/dvd/gps ideas

Sweet Tapatio! I just read up. This is the exact thread i was looking for, but i didn't find it when i searched. I've pretty much figured out what i want to do, with only one question left which Crutchfield has yet to answer. I don't want rear view camera on Reverse only, i like to monitor my bikes etc. while on the move. Anyone know if you can leave the reverse wire unhooked maybe and just use your rear cam anytime with the touch of a button? Crutchfield says basically all of these DVD/GPS units have the camera input on the back but not sure if they have different usability.

thanks again

The Kenwood DNX7140 that I have allows you to selectively turn on the rear camera by holding the audio button for 2 seconds. It also turns on automatically when I put it in reverse. I'm guessing most units have this feature but you should check the owners manual first.

Re: stereo/dvd/gps ideas

I replaced the Kenwood HU that came with upgraded stereo package on my 2005 rig with this Alpine unit. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500INAW910 ... ne+in+dash

It's got all the bells and whistles as well as being a theft magnet but I can view the rear of the vehicle as well as cars or watch the sunset while driving down the road.
