I drive somewhere between 65-85k miles a year, most of that is at night. I can usually tell when a car coming at me has done a hid bulb only conversion. Light is being sprayed all over the place annoying oncoming traffic. It makes me want to grab a handful of ball bearings and toss them out the window. In most cases if the light is a purpleish blue it's coming from a small import car with a useless wing on the back, belching noise out of a loud fart can muffler.
To each his own though. If you do go with a hid bulb only conversion I'd stick with the brightest white you can get. 5000k is usually where you want to be.
