The best high output alternator

I'm looking for a good high output alternator (200A +)

I just lost my alternator (an accident) which was a 200 amp model but was wondering if any members have a suggestion on who really makes the best unit out there. Mine worked OK but I’m looking for that supposed “bullet proof” model (even though there is no such thing), so who makes the best high end alternator? I have seen some models with the remote bridge rectifiers but really I’m after a good high quality model that puts out 200+ amps.

Any ideas?
If I need the remote rectifier, so be it.

Dave

http://badgertrek.com ... Erik just did his and made the pulley smaller too, personally I'd just do whatever he did.

Re: The best high output alternator

You already know this one Dave, but I'll add it here for the discussion:

http://www.alternatorparts.com/6g-serie ... nator.html

Up to 250A and remote diodes for more capacity than fits in the case.

I have the 140A version, and it comes with a smaller pulley as do all the ones on that site.

Re: The best high output alternator

So you actually purchased from that site/company Mike? I tried to call them but got a answer machine. Maybe they closed up for the day.

Jage, I can't find what badger used as far as manufacture. All I recall is him posting about the pully coming loose after the upgrade.

I also don't really want to change the physical size unless it necessary. The remote rectifier system looks good but wonder if the engine compartment might be too hot. I would think if the alternator can take it I wouldn't have a problem.

I am interested in this also

I want to up the juice coming from engin

also would like a manual switch to force charge to camp batteries

why:
when in Utah
snow on the solar
after two days was runnin low on juice
(running fridge, lites, microwave, dvd, cell charge)

in a perfect world:
i would like to know the REAL charge in the starter battery
and the REAL charge on the individual camp batteries

I actually bought from them. Never talked to anyone, just did the transaction over the web. As I said, I got the 140A heavy duty model without the external diodes. 6 x 70 amp diodes seemed like enough. Now if I was getting a really high output model I'd go for the extra diodes.

If you have a SurePower, there is a "Start" terminal that takes a small wire, in my van a light green one. You should be able to supply 12v through a fuse and then a switch right from either terminal side to force the separator closed making all your batteries one system (ergo charging).

I disconnected my green wire permanently as I did not want automatically joined batteries on every start. You can use a diode if you want to connect both the switch and leave this wire connected.

Don't you carry a generator?

When I'm charging the spare battery I usually charge with the inverter and a standalone battery charger while driving. It is also a safer way to jump somebody rather than hooking up to your own system, espically jumping a junkheap. But I have to admit, adding the 200 amp alternator made a huge difference on getting my van/vehicle batteries back up to par at night or on overcast days while driving. The higher output alternator also made it possible to use the microwave on the medium setting without pulling anything off the house system. The main reason I added one in the first place was because the Starcool was pulling juice out of the house batteries when driving at night. Not a problem anymore and I might even go larger than a 200A if it will fit.

Dave
i dont always take the generator
my plan was gen only to run the roof ac

i rely on the solar and engin to charge camp batteries

courious about charging w/ inverter and stand alone charger
can you spec that out?

looks like upgrading to 200amper is in the future
anyone know if having a 200 amper has any negitive effects??

dave, let us know who you buy from pricing, size issues etc

Only negative would be to mileage. Probably less than a half gallon an hour, but not insignificant.
