Turning off the automatic dome lights?

I'd like to keep my dome light off when I open the doors at night.

On other vehicles, I've been able to turn the instrument light dimmer down to the point that the interior lights don't come on when you open a door but it doesn't seem to work for me.

Any ideas short of putting a switch inline? Yes, I've checked the manual.

Thanks.

Wow, I have the opposite problem. My dome lights won't come unless the dash dimmer is all the way bright.

On ours, you turn the headlight switch/instrument dimmer completely CCW and then turn it CW just a bit and it clicks before "turning" into a dimmer switch. That clicking turns the dome lights on and off. Of course, the switches on the dome lights need to be on also...

OK, I don't get it..... we have a switch at the dome light that allows the light to come on with the doors open, or to be ON all the time, or to be OFF all the time.

Do you not have that?

I wish mine worked that way.

No, my dome lights have a single push button toggling between on and off if it isn't being overruled by the doors. I wish they had the three way toggle.

Unfortunately, the dome lights come on every damn time the doors open regardless on how you push the buttons and stays on for a set timer length (15 seconds?) regardless if you toggle the buttons.

Mine was purchased as a 2008 350 RV model from Ford through SMB. I assume the dome light is from SMB given the upholstery lining around it.

I have dual dome lights and each has a pushbutton, each pushbutton overrides the light it's next to (even though they are 2" apart!).

In other words the lights never come on unless the switch is in the "On" position. If the switch is in the "On" (well it's a pushbutton toggle so you can't see if it's On) the light that goes with that switch comes on if:
A) you open a door, and it stays on for awhile
B) you turn the dimmer switch up and then "click" it over to what is "dome on" in every pull spin toggle I've had.

I've often thought of rewiring it- while it is nice to have them dead off via the switches I would like to be able to turn them on without opening a door or reaching to the far side of the steering wheel.

Mine works the same but it's rare that I need to reach across the steering wheel to turn them on, I just use the florescent lights. Most of the time I keep the dome lights off to keep out the bugs. Why not install a separate dome light? I find those things worthless. They sure don't work well as maps lights with my eyes.
