This was my former Ipad mount, which worked out pretty well, but I think it is pretty distracting to look down at anything, radio included. Distracting gadgets, like GPS units, are safer mounted up high so if you glance at them, you still have good peripheral vision of the road ahead.
I wanted to build an overhead shelf and work my Ipad mount in to that, but I haven't had time and wanted to try this on a recent road trip.
Here's the new mount up high
I would like to remove the mirror for a cleaner look, but I want to keep it behind there for when I'm driving without the Ipad/GPS mounted up there.
Worked out great this weekend on my trip, GPS is right up there where I can see it and the road, and only hangs down about an inch below the original mirror level, in other words, doesn't at all affect my vision out of the windshield over towards the right. Oh, that and my radio isn't covered up any more. The only problem is that an Ipad is heavy, so i had to add a small black bungee to the back of the mount around the mirror to keep it from moving around. I will improve upon this when I have some time. Also, this mount is the clip kind where I can pull the whole thing down in about 5 seconds and all that is left is the little black clip secured to the ceiling (through the headliner and inner sheetmetal). I'm currently trying to find an Ipod charge cord long enough to go all the way around the windshield to my charger plug, but I can't find one longer than 6' yet, so I may have to just add a power point up high. Ipads use LOTS of battery when used as a GPS and I don't want a cord dangling down to the dash all of the time.
