How happy are you with the dark cherry cabinets?

I am considering the dark cherry cabinet option but I am concerned about its durability. Does it scratch easily? If scratched has anyone tried one of the scratch cover-up products made for furniture?

Steve: Ask SMB to send you a sample and do a key test on it. I don't have dark cherry, just the beige MDF but assume the cherry is just a paper faced MDF as well. From experience, I can tell you the paper faced product will scratch. The Beige finish is easily repaired with touch-up paint.

I saw a really nice sprinter being finished at SMBF...
and the tech was working on the cherry panels
looked like huge bubbles with conact paper he was smoothing out...

i like my real wood at 1/2 the price

The new cherry cabinets are high-quality real wood-faced plywood with unusually thick face ply. The cabinets are much stronger than the awful MDF cabinets, and considerably lighter as well. I have an '08 with the MDF cabinets because they didn't offer the cherry ply when I ordered my truck. It's really the only thing I don't like about my SMB.

Re: How happy are you with the dark cherry cabinets?

I asked Sportsmobile to send samples of the three laminate choices and they arrived today. I found a sharp key and scratched all three. All three show the depression made by the key, but only the scratches on the cherry actually broke the surface, and even then, not so badly. Here are before and after pictures:

Cherry - Before

Cherry - After

Almond - Before

Dove Gray - Before

Don't get the oak. It is just paper.

If I had an extra 20k I would have all my cabinets replaced with the dark cherry or do what Bill W. did.

Regards,

Keith

Re: How happy are you with the dark cherry cabinets?

The cherry is just paper too. At this point, I am looking into what it would take to have SMB use different materials. It looks like if I supply them with materials, they will use them, but probably not knock anything off the build price. I have a long time to consider the possibilities.

Re: How happy are you with the dark cherry cabinets?

For over ten years we had a purchased new Lazy Daze RV. The cabinets were covered with something thin I believe to be like SMB uses. WE never once scratched through the finsh even with dogs in there the whole time. In fact the cabinets looked new. Hopefully the cherry cabinets I'm getting built into my SMB will be the same.
