Shakedown cruise suggestions

Looking for some suggestions about where to do the first night in the van. I'm thinking Shaver Lake area since it's close to the factory. Any ideas, spots, and suggestions are welcome.
Pick up is tomorrow 6/21 and I need to be at Van Compass on Friday.
TIA

Michael,

First of all, congratulations!

This suggestion is going to seem a bit odd, but bear with me....

Harris Ranch encourages overnighters in the lot between the restaurant and the motel. It is about an hour away, as is Shaver Lake or Lake Kaweah, but it has the added benefit of the air conditioned bar and restaurant (it is currently 106 in Fresno...) We have stayed there several times going up and down the Valley and no one will think twice about you doing what you need to do as you go about checking out the systems. And when you are done there is a cold beer just steps away....

A bit unorthodox, but throwing it out there for consideration!

Say hello to Mark and Rob at Van Compass for me, and remind them that I will be there a week from Friday.

Well you picked one hot week to pick up your van. Probably a record breaker tomorrow. Not sure if Sample Meadow CG is open but it should be cooler up there. Lots of camping around Shaver. Badger is a nice little CG.

The Sierra Vista Byway is a loop road above Bass Lake and also has a lot of camps or spots to boon dock.

Thanks for the ideas Tim and Dave. The heat is one of the reasons I'm looking at Shaver Lake area, supposed to be much cooler up in the hills. Any other suggestions?

Plenty of campgrounds in Sequoia/Kings Canyon, too, but no hookups if you want to try all the systems. We were up there last Sunday. It was 108 in Fresno and in the 70s up in the mountains. Only an hour or so away.

So any new info on SMB classic on ford e350 cutaway chassis?

Hi, I keep calling SMB west to see when they will start building and when they will have
a price sheet so I can get cost nailed down, and each time they say they will start in 2 weeks to a month? Basically they keep moving the production start out and are very obscure with the cost. We had planned a trip in late june, but canceled when they hadnt started building anything yet.. I am starting to wonder if they will actually build the classic?

SMB West visit for me will be in September, I will be passing through Fresno on our way to spend a week climbing in the Shut Eye Ridge complex.
It would be along shot for our rig to be in yet, but I'd follow up if any one needed SITREP/foto doc of theirs...

I just looked at one the other day. I was told they have orders and are starting them. Looked like they made some changes from the original prototype. For whatever reason I didn't take pictures
