I wanted a daily driver with few camper options, more or less, too. I looked at used VW Weekenders, but they seemed way over priced, under powered and unreliable. There's just a group of people out there that are loyal to them and snatch them up.

Anyway, we ended up just buying a new Chevy Express 1500 with very few options and we had the SMB penthouse added to it. I've got 3 kids, so its the big hauler during non-camping times. It gets good mileage for a van its size... I get 17 in everyday driving, 19 on trips with gear and pulling a small trailer. I can park it in the garage and most people don't even know it's a camper. When I need to haul something, it's cavernous without any benches

For camping we pull out the last bench and put in a DIY bed and bench. We love it. We ended up paying less for this setup than we would have for a Weekender that was 5-6 years old with 80-100K on it. Unreal.

Yes I remember the 70's, a VW bus, Tyrolia, and 25 MPH heading to Yosemite. But gas was 50 cents a gallon. Sure wish I had my SMB then. But 5 bucks a gallon won't stop me....well not yet.

We went pretty basic with our SMB. Has the beds/dinette along the sides a closet, pantry and refrig, and microwave. No propane or water.
Probably the most basic unit Huntington ever put together.
It works great for us. We usually camp in state parks or natl parks...so always use there restroom facilities.
Have lots of storage space under the 2 beds.
It works great for us....coming from tent camping we are now in luxury.
