90 Degree Magnetic CB Mount?

I'm not ready to commit to a spot on my van, so I want a magnetic mount as I wait. I'm using a 36" antenna and looking to find a way to place it just above my rear tail light, magnetically. Below is what I'm looking for, but can't find a magnetic mount. The only thing I can think of why I can't find it (or make it) is for the fear that it would slip down after hitting speed bumps and such. Let me know if you have any suggests. Thanks

Re: 90 Degree Magnetic CB Mount?

when I was looking for portable spot lights online I noticed most stores had an option to buy a super strong magnet as alternative mounting to bolting on.

superbrightleds.com has magnets under the accessories for sale. Looks like you can adapt them
for your purpose.

hope that helps.

Plus other web sites I looked at for portable off road lights have heavy duty magnets as well for sale.

Re: 90 Degree Magnetic CB Mount?

I don't think its going to work very well for you in that location. You will have a big hunk of parallel metal just inches away from your antenna. I think the rule of thumb is 1/4 wavelength between other antennas unless you want to affect the wave pattern. You may be able to talk to anyone off your corner, but not be able to reach anyone 100 yards away off your opposite corner. I.e. you just made a directional antenna.

When I ran a CB, its was with a mag mount placed up on top, right in front of the penthouse. Even that location was a little suspect as there was not a lot of horizontal metal left up there to act as a ground plane for an 11 meter wave.

I also agree with your concern of a vertical mag mount moving and scratching your finish. They all move, event the horizontal ones even ever so slightly. Any dust under the mount is going to act as sandpaper.

Solution: Go get your HAM license and operate UHF/VHF. You will like it a lot more.

Re: 90 Degree Magnetic CB Mount?

I agree, not ideal as a good spot for the antenna nevermind the mount.

In addition, I don't know what kind of antenna you have but you've gotta be concerned about whip action as well. It's gonna be bashing the side of your van.

And my mag mount moved a bit even on top. And the whipping action of the Firestick eventually broke the mount and it went flying away.

And then there's cabling. I suppose you could run it through the rear door at the edge; note the one you picture is not only committed by bolts but by a cable run through the body.

Firestik makes a bazillion mounts; you might try something like the trunk lip mount or other clamp on, and find a better place. I ended up with mine next to where the AM radio antenna was. Easy to run cable from there into the cab.

BTW, I use a similar Firestik stud mount for 2 meter with either a Firestik 2 meter antenna, or a smaller dual band, both with stud mounts. And I store them inside for heavy brush.
