Aluminess rear tire mount direction

I have always had my rear spare mounted on the aluminess swing away holder with the hubcap side out. I never liked how this compressed part of the tire against the tubing and the sharp part on the bottom.

today, I reversed it so that the concave part of the wheel is outward, the mounting plate is flush with the wheel, and there is no rubber contact. It still sticks out less than my generator box, so I like it.

My only questions are: does it sticking out a bit more somehow compromise the install by putting a bit more stress on the holder? And does anybody see a good reason NOT to do this?

Any feedback welcomed.

Paul

Re: Aluminess rear tire mount direction

Having contact between the tire and the swing arm provides extra stability for the tire and spreads out the stresses on the swingarm. When I bought my van, I thought there was a bit too much compression, too. I contacted Aluminess. Dave confirmed that tire contact is the goal, and they sent a spacer to go between the swingarm and the plate with the three bolts. Cost was very reasonable. I still have contact between the swingarm tubing and the tire in a couple of places, but it's just enough to keep everything nice and snug.

I agree, contact with the tubing adds stabilization and will reduce fatigue on the bracket.
