Question Best *mid priced* Kinetic Recovery Rope?

Best *mid priced* Kinetic Recovery Rope?

Hi all

We like to go camping 4 seasons, and off the beaten path. Want to carry a 30 foot *mid priced* Kinetic Recovery Rope, just in case we get stuck, or come across someone who needs help.

My instinct is to go for a mid priced Kinetic Recovery Rope - so nothing crappy that will let me down, but not super high end.

A number of people have suggested Yankum Ropes as a good choice.

Looking around the internets I don’t see any unbiased reviews. Any thoughts on what I should buy?

This is the specific 1” model ($214) that Yankum recommended, based on my rig.

https://yankum.com/rattler

thanks

I have next to no experience with this. So take it with a grain of salt.
I was gifted a Us cargo control strap. 3 or 4 inches, can’t remember and 30 feet.
I used it once to yank a large suv out of a pretty deep ditch past the road shoulder. It had both right side tires in the ditch and was high centered.
No issues at all pulling it out first try.
Might want to check out the brand as it’s quite a bit less expensive than the one you linked.

Maybe this??

I've personally never been a fan of kinetic recovery ropes and stick with 3" straps and a steady pull as my preferred recovery method. There's no denying that they work as advertised, but that much stored energy scares the hell out of me after witnessing one break. That said, one of my best friends swears by his Bubba Rope (brand) and I have seen him yank class A motorhomes with stacker trailers out of the sand at Pismo with a big running start and his 496 singing, so that would be my best recommendation. I'm pretty sure his is the "big bubba", not the "jumbo bubba."

I certainly wouldn't go cheap, or with a lesser known brand with this type of rope as things go sideways real fast when one fails.

Theres a local (to me and TheLetterJ) company called Freedom Ropes. I've never had any experience with their ropes but the owner coordinated a group called "Jerk Pirates" who's mission is to help people that are stuck out at the Pismo dunes for free.

They have a website with some videos of recoveries. Seems to be priced similarly to the one you posted.

I haven’t used Yankum ropes myself, but Matt from Matt’s off-road recovery uses them. His videos are quite fun and addicting and if you watch many you’ll find that he uses those ropes hard and is not afraid to get a run with big vehicles roped to his Jeep.

I have now twice seen questionable use of a hitch ball in Matt’s videos, but he does get some seriously stuck vehicles out. For anyone that doesn’t know, don’t hook your rope to a hitch ball.

Hey Mikerson

Yes you are 100% correct - a regular hitch ball should NEVER be used for recovery... it is very dangerous as the hitch ball will usually yank off, and become a very dangerous projectile.

However Matt's hitch ball is a *welded* (super strong) triple hitch ball, and supposedly that is fine to use. But those are a very specific thing, and rare.

well spotted.

Hey Buffalo

I'm learning as I go along.....

This is a good, related article, that I just found... and it explains why I do not want to buy a tow strap, even if it is called something else on the package.

My research indicates that kinetic Recovery Ropes are a LOT safer for everyone involved, and is also safer for both vehicles, (far less jerk on the rigs)

I personally carry a Voodoo Rope 7/8"x30' kinetic (with soft shackle) and a 3"x30' conventional strap (with steel shackles) in my rig. They both have their correct uses and both can be extremely dangerous when applied incorrectly.
