Re: CB Radio Communications
I will be monitoring the CB much more then I will be talking on it. I mainly installed it for when there is a group of us. It's nice to know what is going on ahead and if someone needs help behind, while 4 wheeling.

If there is a traffic backup or the roads are right on the edge of turning to ice I'll turn on the CB and hope to get some usefull road information from other drivers.

I've been shocked at the amount of foul language on the CB. Most of the time I have to turn it off if there is anyone on it having a long conversation because the topic or the language is so foul. So much for FCC rules about language on the CB.
I do like the CB for getting updates on road conditions and for listening to the weather channel. I've found that very helpful. I've also given several truckers directions to their destination here in Vegas. I'll have to try Channel 17 and see if there are more folks on there for I-15 north and south.

I tried monitoring for info on road conditions, weather, etc....., but that didn't work. The CB spews a virtual nonstop flood of moronic banter laden with f-bomds that was not kid (or even adult) friendly. So now I just turn it on if I see something odd, and it is marginally useful. For two way communication on the trail, I use handheld radios.

Re: CB Radio Communications
I also agree, I just use my CB for our group on off-road trails, NOAA weather channels, the P.A., and logging road truckers.

Re: CB Radio Communications
Daveb and I communicated via CB when he was showing me around the Sierra foothills. I was very surprised I got to use it.
BTW, since I have the Rubber Duck on my rig:
I toyed with calling Dave "Pigpen"--then thought better of it.

Re: CB Radio Communications
I use amateur/ham radio. People tend to be much more civil, and with the thousands of repeaters around the US, you can get lots of distance. I've got an iPhone app that will show me local repeaters (using my GPS). Much more useful in case of emergency.
You can 'hack' most ham radios to also communicate with GMRS/FRS - helpful if you are caravanning with others.
I've got a Kenwood TM-V71A in my other vehicle. Just bought the van a few weeks ago and still working on figuring out what I want in it. .

CB Radio Communications
One bennie of CB is the PA switch. Every now and then it's nice to make sure people out there know what's on you mind.

Re: CB Radio Communications
Yep, I still say the P.A. is way better than the old “Mr. Microphone” any day!
