Device to refill small propane cans.

Turns out the small, porttable, propane bottles are not easily found in Baja. Who knew? Anyway, this little device works both above and below the border. Kinda nifty:

I also understand there is an adapter hose that Wal-Mart and others sell that allows you to run a hose from a large tank to a small propane bottle appliance (you can skip the small propane bottle issue altogether). I'll be searching for one of those on my next trip to Wal-Hell for sure.

Has anyone here actually used this device? I've heard that it only fills the disposable bottle with propane gas rather than liquid and so the refilled bottle only has a fraction of the propane that it had when new. Can anyone confirm this?

I have one of these attachments. They are a little tricky. You have to turn the larger propane upside down and the only way I have had any luck is to put the small bottles in the freezer before filling and then they fill fine. They definately are not as full as new but works fine to get you thru a night of lantern.

Not the way I drive.

I'm gonna get a hose to run off the van's tank. Mainly, I need to power my little shower/water heater. Dont' plan on using it, but if we run out of the little bottles, then it will be nice to have a back up plan.

I gave up on mine. Its easier to buy a refillable 1 gallon tank. That will last me a week for most applications. I carry one in the rear box and an extra in the SMB trailer.

I just went and bought a hose and adapter from wal mart to run my shower off the tank in case I run out of bottles. 10 bottles for two weeks plus a small solar shower. Think I'm good.

It is tough to get much into the little cylinders with this device - or any other for that matter. You need to turn the full propane upside down as was mentioned. That is the only way to get the liquid propane into the little guy which is what you NEED. It also helps to have the main cylinder full as the more pressure in that one, the more you'll get into the little one. Also, without the 16 ouncers (is that a word?) having a relief valve, you can't bleed off the gas till liquid comes out.
Bottom line is.... yes you can put some propane into the 16 ounce cylinders, but really not too much. At least I've never been able to get much in. Carry what you need and use the refiller in an emergency.
