Sorry I mean't I have a full size spare where the original was, underneath the rear of the van. Yes I agree Otter, having the platform swing swing to the passenger side is ideal. That's where we do most of the cooking on our "patio".

Have you experienced any drag/bottoming out with the basket going off road?

I haven’t ever hit the ground with my platform but I don’t do any rock-crawling stuff. I’m mostly on backroads, gravel and dirt. Also, the Wilco hitch receiver (the one that swings out) is really high. So high that I had to use an adapter to lower it for my intended use (cooking, etc.; you can see one in the second photo.). I have several for different heights. So the platform is never even close to the lowest point. That aluminum platform I bought is sweet. Nice and light so I never hesitate to take it on and off.

Thanks Otter, that is also my typical travel style. I will explore this option more, it definitely seems to be the most cost effective option so far.
