Re: Everything but kitchen sink? Oh, have one.
Since Jack carries nearly eveything under the sun for emeregencies, I think I will just go on trips with him, and avoid having to assemble my own SMB repair kit!

Re: Everything but kitchen sink? Oh, have one.
I carry all of the above and then some , and the Two things that I would suggest that you do is : Document all on an itemized list and photograph these items .
And develop a storage system in the order of the most frequently used items , this can change from trip to trip , but will allow you to keep track of these items . I have in years past duplicated small items that I had in my vehicles that I couldn't find or had forgotten about . I have a system using small tool satchels that I purchased at Home Depot , Lowes , or Military
Surplus stores that are stored in such a way that related items are close to one another .
You will find that as your collection grows you will need to rearrange items accordingly , this is a very pleasant illness that you will grow to appreciate when something goes amiss or breaks in the middle of your remote Paradise . I have posted some photographs in my Gallery of the items carried .

Re: Everything but kitchen sink? Oh, have one.
Greggde mentions having a list of where things are stored. We did that too although we don't keep it in the van...it was developed when someone on the Yahoo list asked what we carry and where. (It is much longer than the above list of spare parts and special tools.) We know where everything is stored, from the cubby in the engine cover to under the front seats to inside the doors. We decided on where to store things based on how often we use them (in addition to size of course).
But the most important thing is to always put things back where they belong! We were talking to a couple who were on both of the Tuttle Expeditions with us and they were complaining that they could never find anything. But, it turns out that they never put things back in the same place each time! And they were having problems finding things like the salt and pepper and dish soap!

Unfortunately the most important tool I've had to use in my kit is the one device that comes out after all else has failed:
My Sat phone.

Yup, I was going to mention the "Sat Phone" but even that's not reliable sometimes.. especially with Globalstar.
Based on personal experience, about the best thing I can think of along with everything mentioned is:
Never go alone. Use the Buddy system and have another vehicle go with ya...
Fastest way to get help, food/water, parts, tools, etc..
In our case, we still have the dirt bikes, mountain bike if the second vehicle becomes out of action also..

Re: Everything but kitchen sink? Oh, have one.
I'll make a 2nd recommendation for a tire repair kit. Last week I was starting up Death Valley Goler Wash (2 hours from nearest service station) when I picked up a nail. A plug kit (ARB Speedy Tire Seal Kit) together with the onboard air compressor turned a potential all-day repair ordeal into a 15 minute painless quick fix.

I also carry a tire repair kit. Matter of fact I've got one in all my rigs and small ones on my motorcycles and quads. Real live saver. I use the Safety Seal one myself.

x3 on the tire repair kit. I've used it once for my rig and several times on other people rigs. Two years ago we came upon a couple in a Jeep Liberty that had 2 flats and they were on Lipincott road. Very remote. Fixed em' up and sent them on their way.
