Extreme Magnum Air Compressor Troubleshooting

So, I got off the beach last Wed, and remembered the key to the bumper with the air compressor fitting. Aired up three tires no problem, then the compressor stopped. I just went ahead and filled it with the air up stations and drove back home.

I did the troubleshooting Sunday, which was good, because now I know how the system is installed and traced every cable. Needless to say, it was the breaker, which was the last thing I checked/found, but it took me awhile to trace it back to the passenger floorboard, which isn't intuitive since you want the unprotected run of cable as short as possible, hence close to the battery.

Anyways, so what actually happened. The breaker tripped, I closed it, and found that the 2 gal air receiver drain was open so closed that too. I didn't try airing up all four tires, but ran the compressor and it charged the receiver to pressure then cut off. So I think it's working properly but still not sure why it tripped the breaker. Overheating? Too much pressure loss with the drain open? Running for that long drained the battery (the motor was running) dropping the voltage and in turn pulled too much current tripping the breaker?

Appreciate any experience with this compressor, insight, or ideas.

Cheers,

Ryan

You may have over heated the compressor if you exceeded its duty cycle.

At any time while you were re-filling the tires did the compressor seem to be working under a load or straining ?

That's what I was thinking too. The compressor states it's a "Continuous" duty cycle, though I was taking that with a grain of salt.

I don't think it was overloaded, but maybe since the receiver drain was open it was getting overloaded trying to keep up with the volume.

That would be a big possibility on why the breaker opened.

Hope it's nothing more than that.

1. what's the rating on the breaker?
2. what's the gauge of the wire feeding the breaker and the compressor?
3. how clean are the contacts / terminals for all of the above?
4. any pictures?
5. check the air filter.

My guesstimate is that the electrical is substandard.

Use this to determine what wire is correct for this install = Circuit Wizard - Blue Sea Systems
Inputting 12V + 85A + 15-feet + checking all of the boxes = 4 gauge wire + 120-125 amp breaker.

Also check if the Uni filter will fit = https://www.extremeoutback.com/produ...re-uni-filter/

Had a problem with my compressor a while back, ultimately ran some jumpers straight to the Compressor which kicked in immediately.
Contacted Extreme Outback and they suggested replacing both the Pressure switch & Relay (informed me that if either one is acting up it could cause the breaker to flip and/or just stop the compressor from operating altogether).
I replaced both and have not had issue since.

Hopefully your resolve will be as simple.
