H-1 Jack... Test it throughly before you need it.

Hello SMBers,

If you have purchased one of the Hummer scissor jacks for you rig, test it!

I purchased a “new” unit off of eBay late last winter. Due to the raving reviews, I did not test it out. Then I needed it...

I was on I-5 heading south and sadly got a flat tire, at night and in the rain. I was bummed about the tire but thought, well I get to use that cool jack and Agile adaptor (nothing wrong with the Agile adaptor) it set up properly, then broke half way up with no action up or down. The little gearbox the crank handle hooks to stripped out internally. The van was almost lifted enough to get the flat tire off but not high enough to re install the spare. Not wanting to drive off the jack and risk the van, I called AAA. Lucky I had it.

The eBay seller was great and sent out a replacement asap at no cost. I did not even ask for a replacement. Only asked if he had seen any other failures. Only one other was seen.

So, go test your new jack!

Have a great day.

Good to know. BTW, did you test your replacement part?

I cleaned up mine very well when I got it and seriously greased the lead screw. Ran it through its travel, but not under load. I guess that's the real test.

I have two of these and oddly enough did test each one before packing each one away for later use. I also greased the lead screw with chassis lube which seemed like a good idea---both mine had very very minor surface rust.

I am curious if your H-1 jack was the same as most of us have bought with recommendations made here? I've seen several types listed under different search parameters or names as found on eBay. This is what I have: https://www.ebay.com/itm/HMMWV-HUMME...4AAOSwoM5bzzrP

Mind did come with the bag and all tools----very useful!

Yep! Same jack you have and I purchased it because of the discussion here.

Probably a very rare situation. This did remind me that it is always a good idea to actually use your gear before you need it.

Absolutely test before first use---of ANY tool or other item!

At the moment I'm having a bit of a smallish problem with a "tool" bought for just over $2.500---I'm fairly sure its with what I'm feeding it rather than the "tool" itself. Good thing I tested this before its first use---too important a thing to have fail at the most inopportune time.

Not to mention (and it doesn't apply to these jacks) how many times have I tried to use a tool only to find it doesn't work, and it's already past its warranty date? That always happens when I buy a tool to use on a project and then don't get around to the project for a while.

Just another data point.
Greased the lead screw and ran the van up a couple of times. Thankfully no problems.

The jack is now in the basement. Now that it is tested and stored, I hope that it will never be needed.
