Hand held GPS users - Does your basemap show roads?

I got a basically free Bushnell Onix2000CR GPS. I wanted to use this when away from the SMB on hikes, etc.

While you can buy terrain maps and aerial maps for someplaces, the base map is basically blank. If you zoom enough you can see big cities, etc. but no zooming in for details.

Bushnell says it didn't design base maps for this unit because "out in the field" you don't need road, etc. information. I have been "out in the field" a lot and often you run across a road or see a road or other sign of civilization. The GPS's (Garmin eTrek) we used in Iraq had roads, rivers, etc. so I was surprised.

So, do your hand held GPS's have a decent base map? I think Bushnell is nuts but maybe I am!

Regards,
Keith

I always have a map loaded but off the maps the roads are very sparse and the information is erratic (pathing for directions that include any part off of a City Navigator map are garbled).

So I would say unless I crossed an Interstate or other major road it probably wouldn't be on the base map, but the base map is good enough to get me from city to city.

Our Garmin eTrex Vista shows roads. All the roads we've been on, except a 50 mile section of the highway through Labrador.

Canadian and US roads all in the base product. Quite impressive.

GPS Base Mapping

And most of the Garmin units offered in the last two years can be upgraded on your PC's . I just recieved a Colorado 400t from my son in law that has some very advanced feature's not previously offered from Garmin and the detail is amazing ,
