Hella Rallye 4000 Compact Xenon HID Driving Lamps

Not sure it's of interest to anyone else, but I just verified that the Hella Rallye 4000 Compact lights fit inside the fog light openings on the Aluminess (Trojan) bumper. Even with the clear acrylic covers installed.

This is good news to me because that's about as protected as expensive lights can get. It also makes them street legal as driving lights here in Washington State (and California, I think), as long as they are wired to only be on when the high beams are on.

I haven't actually wired them up yet. I can tell it will be a bit of a pain to aim them.

Now I just have to figure out how to safely hang some fog lights beneath the bumper so they're street legal. I'm thinking something like this with a protective frame around them.

I should point out Washington doesn't seem to care how bright the lights are just where they're positioned and how they're switched. Putting lights on top of the bumper, with 35" tires installed, puts most of the light out of the legal range.

The HID's actually draw less power... so the wiring thats there already is most likely adequate. The HELLA's are 55 watts and the HID's are generally 35watts.

Old thread bump:

Haven't measured my rig, but WA law says that the center of the auxiliary lamp can't be more than 42" above the road. Center of fog lamps can't be more than 30" above road.

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.37.180
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.37.030

I also recall some other provision (WAC, FMVSS?) that says auxiliary lights must be mounted below the bottom of the windshield (ie no roof mounted driving lights, no "safari" lights on mirrors, etc).
