Hi-Lift jacks

Wondering if the chrome bumper on my 2002 Ford Diesel 350 Sportsmobile is strong enough to support the van being lifted by a jack.
Bumpers aren't what they used to be. Anyone used a hi-lift jacket on the Ford 350?
Thanks

No, you will bend it.

Re: Hi-Lift jacks

I agree that a stock bumper may bend, even with bumper attachment. Depends on why you're lifting as there may be other methods.

Re: Hi-Lift jacks

Mainly to lift the tires out of a mud bog and get unstuck?

Re: Hi-Lift jacks

If using the Hi-Lift for those purposes is great, I suggest the wheel adapter which allows you to lift a wheel. Also the base so you don't sink the jack in mud and also much more stable.

Re: Hi-Lift jacks

What about using the trailer hitches as a starting point for lifting. I have them front and back?

The biggest challenge in doing that, is you'd need to lift the entire front or rear end, vice just one corner of the van. Jacking up that much weight with a Hi Lift can be a workout.

Plus you have less lateral stability, since likely both tires won't be in full contact with the ground at some point- if you're on the slightest slope, I'd expect the van to shift sideways as soon as the traction is broken. It would probably save you from a dangerous situation because without other equipment you'll be lucky to get it up, and it won't be stable- so much so you'll probably not want to get near the tire!

You can jack via the hitches, don't get me wrong, but to me it seems like a "there are no other options" move. Before that I'd use a J-hook and sacrifice the bumper, but you should really just get a good bottle jack and be done with it.

Re: Hi-Lift jacks

I recently purchased a couple of HUMMER H1 HUMVEE M998 HMMWV SCISSORS JACK rated at 3.5 Tons and they lift to over 20 inches. I also made an extension that goes on top for additional reach. I'm thinking these might just be the best solution for my SMB and am looking forward to testing them out.

I welded nuts on them so that I can operate them with my Cordless Impact Gun - very fast!

I'll try to get some pictures of them in action.

This is what they look like.

Re: Hi-Lift jacks

Thanks for the scissor jack tip. Looks like the best option.
