Homemade "Skreenz"

Since I have wind/rain vents on my front windows, I can't use the standard Skreenz, so it's time to make my own pseudo-skreenz.

I have four choices for material:
  • standard fiberglass window/door screening[/*:m:11ub2udd]
  • "no see-um" 20x20 window screening (much finer mesh than standard)[/*:m:11ub2udd]
  • tent screening material (very fine and tears easily)[/*:m:11ub2udd]
  • mosquito net (as in, buy a Coughlin mosquito net and cut it up)[/*:m:11ub2udd]

Any opinions on which I should use?

Thanks!

Re: Homemade "Skreenz"

I would either go with nylon standard screen or the no-seeum mesh...

Re: Homemade "Skreenz"

We made the screens for our front door windows out of "cat proof" screening. Not as small as "no see um" style screening but the stuff is tough.

Of course, now I have to worry about polling metrics and sample size and margins of error in the results...

As an update: I grabbed some of the standard screening today (it's the cheapest alternative) and made up a set of Pseudo-skreenz. I reckon that these will do double duty:
  • might keep the bugs out in the coming month as I head to NC, WV and NJ[/*:mfwdnc49]
  • should serve as a pattern if I need to make a new set from a more appropriate fabric.[/*:mfwdnc49]

The hardest part is getting a good fit around the mirrors. I've made a stretch-fabric gusset secured with velcro, which works well, but will not be easy to dry if there is a good rain. Magnets along the bottom compensate for the non-stretchy mesh fabric.

Test trip begins on Monday.

Re: Homemade "Skreenz"

Based on Langton's post, I just bought the skeeterbeater screens. They look great and fit right on. Lots of magnets and fit tight on the front door windows. Fold up into a small (included) pouch. Heck of a deal for way less then half the price of the Skreenz.
I'm super happy. Thanks Langton.

Re: Homemade "Skreenz"

UPDATE :

Just finished four weeks in the mid-Atlantic and southern states with home-made screens from standard window screen material, sewed in a "pseudo-skreenz" configuration.

Worked very well, even in Mississippi!

Do you plan to become a vendor or Hobbyist?

Heaven forbid! I still have way to much to do on my homebrew -- the punchlist is a mile long. And I haven't figured out how I want to make and attach the side door screens yet!

I'll get photos this weekend and post, so others can try their hand at sewing up a set.
