Re: Ice Chests

Just came across this brand of ice chest, that appears to be similar in design concept to the Yeti's, but seems to be significantly cheaper. Whether they cut corners or not to achieve a lower price point I can't say, as I haven't seen them in person.

They are all made in the US, where Yeti's have two manufacturing locations in the US, and one overseas.

Re: Ice Chests

I couldn't find anything about dry ice on their site. So I would think not.

Good catch. I put an e-mail into them asking them about dry ice compatibility.

Response from Brute Outdoors.

"Hi Herb,

You will have to tell me a little bit more about your forum. We are happy to have us mentioned!

Good news, we have tested our coolers in extreme heat and cold without any issues. You are good to go on using dry ice.

Please let me know what other questions you have.

Thanks,
Emily Denson"

Re: Ice Chests

I've had some pretty good experience with various cooler from cheap to $$$. The Yeti's hold up the best, and keep food the longest. Our one Yeti on our Grand Canyon trip held ice until day 12 (we didn't have to time to freeze it solid, so we only used bagged ice).

A tip to make your ice last longer: Drape a damp towel over the cooler.

Re: Ice Chests

I replaced my old upright fridge w/ a Engel Combi 65 fridge and freezer (not one or the other)... way spendy, but really impressed with the performance, though some of the design elements leave me wanting. Sooo, I researched coolers, and bought an Engel 65 cooler as they seem to review and test as well as, if not better than, Yeti. I plead guilty to staying with the fridge brand, but the cooler is a fine tool also. Again, it has some puzzling design elements, but with all the available accessories it seemed a bit more to my liking than Yeti or other high-end product. Plus, it comes in white, which Yeti did not have at that time. I'm pretty sure Yeti sells 65's in white now. Engel is worth a look if you are shopping for coolers. IMHO

Re: Ice Chests

A major player in the ice chest wars is how the latches are designed. How secure are they? Will they stay latched when the ice chest is strapped to an downside up raft bouncing down a river? If they do break due to the hard life of a well used piece of outdoor equipment can they be replaced?

I really like the way the Engle latches are designed. Not so much about the latches on the Yeti coolers.

Re: Ice Chests

The Yeti was sitting at Bass Pro and was an easy target. Like I said, when I saw it was rated for dry ice it was just what I was after. I also noticed it was rated for bears. I'm often exposed to bears but more importantly, I was tired of the rangers messin with me about an ice chest left out of the bear box. I don't leave it outside at night as a rule but it's nice to know if it's locked and chained it not taking a hike or roll like I've seen happen to some ice chests. Don't want the bears drinkin my beers
I do know many other ice chests are rated for dry ice. What ever doesn't float your brews.

Re: Ice Chests

I think the Yeti is the best cooler made. I came home late from a trip once in south Texas and left the Yeti in my van during the summer filled with ice and beer in it. 5 days later I cleaned out my van while enjoying a nice cool beer from the cooler. If you don't open and close it often it will keep beer cool for a very long time. I have also used it with Dry Ice but you have to be careful about having the gas from the ice hit you in the face when you open it up since it seals up so tight.

Re: Ice Chests

PS - I have done some "testing" and the Yeti does stay closed and dry inside even after being underwater below an upside-down boat for a half-mile or so, and drug over several rocks....
