PC-based map/trip planning software?

I find trip planning on a phone/tablet cumbersome. Any suggestions for a PC-based software package?

Unfortunately many of the PC-based map programs have gone away, or are targeted large trucking outfits. One that is for road travel only is Mapfactor and for a full map package you could try TopoFusion

I had used Mapfactor a few years ago in my carputer system, I have never used the TopoFusion, but it kind of has the look of the old Delorme Pc based topo.

I use Gaia GPS. It is cloud based, so I can log into their website on my laptop, trip plan and then when I log into the app on my phone it has the details of all the work I did on my computer. That way I can follow the plan on my phone but don't have to actually do any of the planning on the phone. I used to use Delorme, but since Garmin took over it seems like they pretty much just killed the old Delorme computer software.

2nd Gaia. Especially as it also has the small roads + it's laying the track on these roads. Transfer from device to device works sooo nice. just a minute after you set up a track on the PC it's on your phone as well.

Yep on Gaia GPS for me too. For all the reasons stated above. If I want to go real time, I hook up my USB GPS receiver and get real time. Otherwise, I save the map segments I want on my laptop and use them on my phone. Same thing with tracks, routes, and waypoints. Simple, which for me is a big technophobe thumbs up.

I got sick of Gaia and their web interface and how slow it was.
Caltopo is much better.

Gaia has an awesome reputation indeed. However I spend too much time off the grid to rely on a web-based solution. It's one thing to plan during a connection to the internet but when you need to adapt to a new situation you're dead in the water in the boonies. Anyway, I'm following to see what other options might be out there.

Doesn’t Gaia have a non-internet option?

I use Locus Pro and OSMAnd Pro for “off road” and CoPilot for on road on an android phone. Maps on hard drive, no cell reception, works like a GPS using GPS satellite only. Can download maps with Wi-Fi. No internet needed to use once maps are loaded.

Gaia can be used offline only on the app. The web site is just that, a web site. You can create routes on Gaia website, it will even create routes on trails.

Gaia is my main offroad GPS solution, but I don't use "routes", since they are dependent on which map is used. Instead, I drop waypoints at major intersections during planning, then use maps during the trip.

I prefer tracks that I might follow manually without navigation per se, waypoints or just the app/GPS as a map.
