Porta Potti and Insurance (Split)

I just called Progressive and they took a very long time on the phone to determine how to insure our SMB. Ultimately it came down to this: If there is a stove, sink, refrigerator, furnace, second AC, and a permanently installed marine toilet (not a porta potti), then it is an RV and they can insure it as such. If it lacks the toilet, it cannot be insured by Progressive, as it is classed as a regular vehicle (not an RV) and the presence of the propane tank in a regular vehicle constitutes an "unacceptable risk."

Fortunately GEICO had no trouble insuring it. They did require a list of every modification made to the base van, along with the cost of each.

State Farm insured our SMB as an RV. It had to have a bed, toilet (no mention of permanently installed), a stove - any 2 out of 3.

Progressive has their head up their ass. Find another realistic insurer.

I also checked with GMAC insurance via Good Sam club, and they wanted almost $700/6mos to insure it. GEICO added it to my policy for less than $300/6mos. (I've been with GEICO for about 25 years, good driving record, etc.)

So it's a bit more of a hassle to get it all inventoried with GEICO, but may be worth a call.

Lowracer - at least you are trying to insure it as an RV. I went through a ton of pain trying to insure our SMB as an every day driver.

Just to preface this, my wife and I both have clean driving records (no tickets or accidents in the last 10 years). I went through similar problems with Progressive. Geico wouldn't insure it. Liberty Mutual (our old insurance) wanted about $2,000 every six months. State Farm was better but still really expensive. We finally went through AAA and got a very good rate. Unfortunately, they wouldn't insure our home though since they won't insure homes with a flat roof (we have a 10 x 15' roof top deck).

I think I got the same 2 out of 3 requirement when I talked with AAA. As far as I know, it's the same requirement criteria for California (DMV) to classify a vehicle as an RV.

I went w/ State Farm and it was a piece of cake. I have been w/ our local agent for 10+ yrs for both our vehicles and our homeowner's/business insurance. Ended up something like 375.00 for 6 mos. It took 10-15 minutes for my agent to calculate and research things and get back to me - sounds like she also has written policies for a few of the other SMB's here in the Park City area so I think that helped.

I have a policy with AON Recreational Insurance, a broker for National General Insurance Co. They wanted a description of the van, ('07 E350 V10), the vin # and what I paid for it. $803/yr. Maybe I should have shopped around.

It has much to do with who your rep is.

If you contact Progressive directly, you are bound to get stuck with an automation who just regurgitates the stuff out of a book. I looked at the difference in going direct vs going through our broker...it was $150 a year (900 vs 1050). Full cost replacement coverage, 100 deductible, highest medical coverage, etc. There were lower cost plans w/hiher deducts. I ended up going with our broker:

They negotitate directly on my behalf if I have any claims and know the insurance jargon better than me. We had to satisfy the two out of three hoop as well. Running water, installed stove and bed covered it.

All of our XRs are insured through Progressive too and we've been happy w/that.

It's frustrating trying to explain to someone what a SMB is. I just faxed our final work order in, with our paid invoice and the broker took care of the rest. It was well worth the extra 150 bucks.
