Porta Potti usage info?

Hi All!

I notice a few of you use the porta potti or the like

What is your usage:
How many days can you hold out before purging the waste tank?
Do you use it in your vehicle? Or out side in a tent?

I have just acquired a "Campa Potti" from Thetford and have tested at home just to see how it copes:

3 days for 2 people filled 1/2 waste tank and used about the same of the rinse tank. That is about 7.5 litres of rinse water and 10 litres of waste... Smell is virtually nil in use, however emptying the tank is another matter and is tricky to get clean...

I would apretiate your experiences
(I also want to add that this is for use in areas where there is no "behind that tree solution" )

Re: Porta Potti usage info?

We can get about 2 weeks on the P-P before it must be emptied. But, we try to use outside facilities as much as possible and the P-P is primarily used at night and first thing in the morning - and it is always used inside the camper.

Since the thing tends to get heavy when it is full, I try to empty it closer to 1/2 full. Fortunately it can be emptied almost anywhere.

Re: Porta Potti usage info?

What capacity PortaPottis do you have? We are looking at the smallest Thetford (10L fresh water tank, 10L waste tank) and would be interested to know the same things saabman is asking.

Thanks,
Brent

Re: Porta Potti usage info?

We have never had to empty our Porta potti during a trip, and have never had any too full issues.

The longer our trip is planned to be, the more we try and use external facilities.

We have only had the SMB for a year now.

We have had two trips that were a week long, so I am not sure how long the trip would have to be for us to have to empty on the road.

Re: Porta Potti usage info?

Ours is 3.2 Gal (~12L) Fresh and 6.1 Gal (~23L) Waste.

Our longest trip was 8 weeks. Hoping for a longer trip this year.

Re: Porta Potti usage info?

We use our porta-potti regularly and it usually needs to be emptied about every three days with the two of us. I would recommend buying some of the waste treatment solution for marine and rv toilets this makes it so there is virtually no foul smell when emptying the tank. I just put about an ounce in the bottom of the bowl and rinse it down after emptying the tank. This make the job of emptying the tank much more tolerable.

We also always use the porta- potti in the van.

Re: Porta Potti usage info?

We've tried:
nothing... bad idea but if you have no other choice.
blue liquid... too hard to seal the bottle, even double bagged once opened the smell just reeks from where ever we put it.
blue pillows... pretty good, but they're for a much larger holding tank. Feels wasteful everytime we toss one in.
little white unscented tabs about the size of a dime... these were on sale at the local RV shop and have yet to try them.

Of note, since we're talking porta potties, always crack the trap door and close again before lifting the lid.. releases the pressure.

There are many, many versions of this product. Which brand works for you?

Re: Porta Potti usage info?

Yes John,
What sort of treatment do you use? I have tested the Thetford "Campa Green" so far...
But was wondering what other products are good?
