My first thought was height issues (actually it was "Do you get the pinzgauer too?") but actually if that front rolled flap was attached as sort of an awning over the side doors of the van, that could be a really awesome setup.

Re: Portable Awning

Ah yes height is an issue for you 4x4 guys, but me with my "low" 2WD rig I can fit the rear doors of the van inside the first section of the tent. this adds a good 4 meters of extra living space...

That being said I haven't got the tent yet

Re: Portable Awning

Here's some photos of how the Bus Depot's Ezy-Awning attaches to my Eurovan and a couple of the repairs I've had to do. Hope these help with anyone's decision making. -JM

Quick-release clips. There's three total, permanently installed.

Cordura strap from inside pop top- the strap is locked down under the tent's anchor beam.

Close up of the cordura strap.

quick release clips- there's 3 sets that attach awning to van. You can see the corner pocket of the awning gets a lot of stress from the tent poles hence the pulled out stitches.

The flap from the awning covers these clips, i pulled it back for the photo.

There is some play in the awning when it's windy since it just hangs from these three clips. It hasn't done any damage to the paint though.

The 3 clips stay under pop top when it's lowered. They don't get in the way or cause any sort of problem.

Heavy duty suction cups that mount to any flat surface. haven't actually used them yet. Usually the set up comes with either suction cups or the quick release clips but mine showed up with both.

Some of the stitching i've replaced (white) and some more i'm about to replace (grey thread).

Different angle

Re: Portable Awning

i know this is a seriously old thread, but reading through and seeing Larus' post got me thinking that once i have a clear/dry day here on the oregon coast i'm gonna see if my truck tent will fit on the rear of our van. . . that would add a whole new dimension to van camping next season for us.

This was taken in our backyard as a test run on the TACO a few seasons back. It was a really nice addition!

Happy Trails

Very old post, but I noticed that they make something that is a fully enclosed room which seems to be exactly what you are looking for: http://busdepot.com/details/addaroom.jsp Setup and teardown is clearly more involved, and cost is higher.

Re: Portable Awning

Well, I have this awning for the Big Baby. I must say it has very bad instructions and took a team of 3, with one watching and laughing!, to set it up the first time. The second time, I was still frustrated and took it in the back yard with a friend and set it up and labeled the poles and wrote down the sequence, etc. I think it would be difficult but not impossible to do by yourself. No beer drinking until it is up. ! Plus it may be too much hassle if you are only staying one night....guess it depends on the weather. Now that I understand it and can throw away the directions, it seems like a good collapsible awning.
