I had the same idea about looking somewhat official in places where big diesel guzzling vans are less welcome. I had one made up to help distract.

Vandiesel...that is stellar! Can I use that too? Beats my biodiesel. Tired of getting flipped the bird by people in the crosswalk, although admittedly rare. Portland is somewhat atypical in that regard.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

To go back on track with the original post but skewed a bit, I was at an accident the other day and got a look at the CHP's new SUV that has replaced the older cruisers. As I was looking at the new vehicle the CHP asked what I was looking for. I told him I had to see what this thing looks like coming up behind me cause I always speed.

Crap, it's hard to see this one coming at ya so watch out.

BTW my Escort 9500 has saved my ass enough times to pay for itself.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

It 's not just SMB 's that are targets. We did a trip back East four years ago ( Micahel Jackson died,I think the day we left. .No tv reception,no endless M.J. Coverage hooray! ) in our big old Bounder. Got pulled over just across the border of Arkansas / Oklahoma at 10:30 pm. License plate light was out. Trooper asked where we were headed. I told him Washington DC for 4th of July,NY. Boston,Niagra Falls, St Louis, Colorado and back to Cali with lots in between. Month long trip. He said Arkansas was pretty and suggested we use the rest area ahead and see his fine state during the day and of course change the bulb. Took his advice and slept, found Walmart the next morning and installed bulb then passed Little Rock lost both inside duals. While waiting for our $300 a piece Double coin Chinese 19.5 s to be installed( $175 in Cali) another trooper came in to get a flat fixed ran our plates as we sat in our camp chairs looking like real desperados with our 3 kids and 2 little dogs. On the way back through Kansasa trooper fell in behind me and clearly called in our plates. Hmmmmm? . I told my older brother who lives in Mendocino county Cali and he said a lot of the pot growers were shipping product back East in motorhomes so Cali plates + old ratty rv = drug runners. I was profiled. Someone call the ACLU!

Only time I have been stopped is when I was doing 20 over the limit. Can't think of any other. Oh, did have an OPP officer stop and offer assistance when I had a flat.

Re: Vans such large targets for the police

I had a CHP officer stop and talk with me once during a rest break. I pulled to the side of the road in a wide spot along hwy 49. I don't know if he was profiling or just checking on me. I think just checkng. My body language probably said "frustrated" and he could tell why from the sounds of the screaming baby inside with my wife. We had a good chat. He was a young guy, liked the look of the van. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with one someday.
